How do I archive digital photos?

I take a lot of digital photos. What is the best way to archive these? Searching through photos is a real problem if I write them to CDs and move them from the hard disk.

  2. An external harddrive is the only way to go.
  3. There are various ways you can go about archiving your photos depending upon which computer operating system you are using. If you are using Apples OSX then the simplest method would be to use i-photo. On the pc side I would say Newsofts Mr. Photo3 is a good option which allows a user to create custom folders and directories for your images. If you are a fairly computer savy person I would suggest using Adobe Photoshop and create proof sheets i.e., digital contact sheets for all the images on the cd. Basically these are CD jewel case sized prints with lots of small images on them so as to tell me what is on each cd. Seeing as how my images are usually around 80mb each, I dont have many images to deal with and can put my images on 1 or 2 proof sheets. However you may have to go 8x10 or larger.
  4. I highly recommend that you try Picasa from Google http://picasa.google.com it is a free utility to help you do exactly what you need: Archive, Categorize and do some special effects on your photos. A better alternative will be to buy a pro account on http://www.flickr.com where you can upload and tag all your photos very easily and quickly. Other users could leave you comments and help you by tagging your own photos for you. Good luck
