Resulting from a private situation
That family caregivers often get tangled up when they want to care for their loved ones is something I’ve experienced up close. In 2014, the mother of one of our partners was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Naturally, the family was eager to care for her. However, due to the distance and busy family lives, this proved challenging to implement in practice. It inspired my brother Harm and me to develop the ‘dementia app,’ making it easy to divide tasks.

Further development after success in practice
The app proved to work well. The mutual bond between the family members became closer, and the pressure of informal care was better distributed. This gave us the idea that we could help more people. The need turned out to be even greater than expected! We started the company Memory Lane – and by now, the old app had been sold 40,000 times and was in use in 30 municipalities until the end of 2018. Even then, we wanted to move on because the families were working with a regular tablet of their own – and that proved to be difficult for older people, significantly when their cognitive skills are declining.

Collaboration of specialists
This is how the CareScreen came into being. LENOVO developed a new touchscreen for us, and the software was developed by Roxelane Development. This company is a specialist in artificial intelligence, which enabled us to make the functions extremely user-friendly and intelligent. The online connection of the CareScreen is maintained by our partner T-Mobile. Together we have ensured that we now offer a unique device that is 100% geared towards use by elderly people and their carers.

Proud of our work for the elderly and informal carers

Memory Lane has grown into a company where 35 people are dedicated to improving the lives of older people and their loved ones. We keep looking for new possibilities and innovations to help more and more people. Of course, I am proud of the company created during the development and what has been achieved in recent years. Of course, I am proud of the team that has ensured that we are where we are today. But I am particularly proud when I receive a message from an informal carer or an elderly person who says that the CareScreen contributes to a better life. A life in which older people remain independent for longer and their informal carers find a better balance between home and care.

With heartfelt greetings,

Pieter Hasenaar
